Ex-Celtic manager Neil Lennon linked with surprise England return

Neil Lennon might have achieved a lot of success as Celtic manager over his two stints in the managerial hot seat at the club but his Parkhead exit came in the worst possible manner. The Hoops had the chance to create history by winning 10IAR but completely collapsed, finishing 25 points behind the Rangers in the Premiership and trophyless.

The Northern Irishman would step down in February of last year but by then, it was clear that Celtic had no chance of catching up with the Rangers. It goes without saying that the 2020/21 campaign was a blow to Lennon’s reputation as a manager.

While Lennon never made a secret of his desire to return to management, he would have to wait till March of this year before he ended up at Cypriot First Division side, AC Omonia Nicosia.

He has done a decent job at Omonia Nicosia over the past couple of months but he is already being linked with a return to England. As reported by Alan Nixon (via The Bolton News), Lennon has been included to Charlton Athletics’ shortlist for their next manager. They are currently playing in League One.

Ex-Celtic manager linked with Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic got relegated from the Championship a couple of seasons back and did not have a good 2021/22 campaign, finishing in 13th in League One. They are a club who would surely have ambitions of getting back up to the second division of English football.

Lennon has previous experience of managing in England with Bolton Wanderers and it will be interesting to see if he does indeed end up getting the Charlton Athletic job.

Celtic, on the other hand, must be delighted with Ange Postecoglou, who ultimately ended up replacing Lennon in the Parkhead managerial hot seat, after a short stint from John Kennedy as caretaker boss. The former Australian national team manager arrived in unenviable circumstances but appears to be closing in on a League Cup-Premiership double in his first season in charge.
