One area that Celtic appear to have a lot of quality options right now is striker. There is very little doubt about Kyogo Furuhashi’s quality even though he has had to spend a large portion of his season out on the sidelines dealing with injuries. On the other hand, after a difficult start, Giorgos Giakoumakis has come into his own since the turn of the year and scored left, right and centre.
Daizen Maeda has not led the line on his own particularly well but he is someone who can play up top as well, and will hopefully grow into that role as he becomes more accustomed to Scottish football. It is worth pointing out that he arrived only in January.
Albian Ajeti is expected to leave the club in the summer though after his £5 million move from West Ham United has not worked out at all. And that could open up the spot for another striker in the squad.
As reported by L’Equipe, Celtic would have submitted a €3 million transfer offer for Caen’s Alexandre Mendy. The Ligue 2 side appear to be keen on keeping hold of their striker but would also be ready to negotiate and let him go if a higher offer is made.
Celtic have submitted transfer bid for 16-goal striker
Mendy has been at a number of clubs through the course of his career, including Bordeaux and OGC Nice, spending the majority of his time in Ligue 1. But he seems to have found his best after moving to Ligue 2 side Caen.
According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 16 goals in 30 Ligue 2 appearances this season.
Interestingly, at 28 years of age, this is the first time when Mendy has crossed the 10-goal mark in a league campaign. Naturally, there will be questions about whether he has finally found his best as a player or if this is just a solitary good season for him. Ange Postecoglou has shown a tremendous eye for picking out players who fit into his system though.
As things stand, it looks like Caen are looking for more than a €3 million transfer fee to part ways with their in-form striker. Yet, it must be pointed out that despite Mendy’s terrific form, the French club sit at 8th in Ligue 2 and are not going to be promoted. That could make Celtic’s task of getting a deal over the line a bit easier.
