It is safe to say that Ange Postecoglou has done a magnificent job ever since his appointment as the Celtic manager in the summer. The magnitude of the task that he faced at Parkhead was immense. The club had finished 25 points behind the Rangers in the Premiership last season and underwhelmed in every other competition as well. On top of that, the squad underwent a major overhaul.

Key players like Odsonne Edouard, Scott Brown, Kristoffer Ajer, Ryan Christie and a few others departed Celtic in the summer while they signed twelve players, ten on a permanent basis and two on loan. After that, five more signings were made in January as well.

Considering all the obstacles and the fact that this is his first experience at a top European club, with his only other stint at Greek club Panachaiki, Postecoglou deserves a lot of credit and must have surely caught the attention of a lot of clubs.

One of those clubs appears to be Manchester City. As reported by Fox Sports, Rory Smith said on BBC’s 5 Live Sport:

“Ange Postecoglou is not going to get the Man City job, but there are a lot of people at City who really rate him.

“That actually says all you need to know about how well regarded he is within coaching circles. He worked for Yokohama Marinos which is the City Football Group team in the J-League.

“They think he’s really, really good.”

Fortunately for Celtic, it does not look like Postecoglou is going to be handed the Manchester City job if Pep Guardiola left though, as Smith added:

“I’m not saying it’s impossible (that Postecoglou would replace Guardiola), but it would be surprising.”

It is easy to forget now but when Celtic appointed Postecoglou, a lot of eyebrows were raised. While he had enjoyed a lot of success in both Australia and Japan, he was largely an unknown in the European club game.

Thus, many felt that Celtic had made a panic decision after an attempt to bring in Eddie Howe had failed to materialise.

Less than a year on, it is hard to imagine that many managers could have done a better job than Postecoglou has and Celtic fans would be hoping that he remains at Parkhead for years to come.
