Celtic tipped to sign McGregor ally in January after confirmed transfer news

Alex McLeish has tipped Celtic to sign a new creative midfielder in January to “take a wee bit of pressure” off Callum McGregor.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Bhoys captain could do with some “help” in the middle of the park.

As quoted by the Scottish Sun (29th October), Ange Postecoglou confirmed he hopes to bring in a new playmaker during the winter window.

The Australian manager admitted Tom Rogic’s current injury layoff has highlighted his need for additional options.

He pointed to McGregor and Jota as two alternative options already at Parkhead.

However, McLeish suggested the Scotland international could do with further assistance in midfield, rather than being to one to take Rogic’s place.

“I kind of felt the defence was somewhere the opposition could get at,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“If you’re looking at midfield, then I don’t think they’re quite at the level where Brendan Rodgers was and the midfielders he had in there.

“They’ve still got McGregor, who is a terrific player. Maybe, to take a wee bit of pressure off him, they need someone with great authority to help him in there.

“We know that Rogic is heading into the later years of his career so it’s likely that Celtic will bolster that position.”

Rogic, who is out with a hamstring injury, has played 22 times across all competitions this season.

Meanwhile, McGregor has made 20 appearances under Postecoglou.

Liam Shaw and James McCarthy were Celtic’s only midfield signings this summer.
