Major update on Celtic’s rumoured Alexandre Mendy transfer bid

Celtic’s frontline has undergone a major overhaul recently, with the likes of Odsonne Edouard, Patryk Klimala and Leigh Griffiths all departing Parkhead. On the other hand, Kyogo Furuhashi and Giorgos Giakoumakis arrived in the summer and have done a fantastic job between them. Daizen Maeda, who was brought in from Ange Postecoglou’s former club, Yokohama F. Marinos, in January, is capable of playing there as well.

Thus, it is safe to say that the Hoops have quite a few options up top right now but might have to look for another striker this summer, with Albian Ajeti expected to be headed out of the exit door.

Ajeti was signed from West Ham United a couple of summers back for a transfer fee believed to be around £5 million but it has quite clearly not worked out for the Swiss international at Parkhead.

With him looking set to be on his way out, recently rumours broke out that Celtic had submitted a €3 million transfer offer for Caen’s Alexandre Mendy, who has been a man in form this season. But now, it looks like that might not have been the case.

Major update on Celtic’s rumoured €3 million Mendy transfer bid

As tweeted out by Anthony Joseph, there has been no contact from Celtic for Mendy although the journalist does believe that the club could be on the lookout for a striker this summer:

Mendy has been in brilliant form for Caen this season. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 16 goals in 30 Ligue 2 appearances till now in the ongoing campaign.

But at the same time, he is 28 years of age and this is the first time that he has crossed the 10-goal mark in a league campaign. He has played in the past for clubs like Bordeaux, OGC Nice and others. Thus, when the rumours emerged, questions were raised about whether he was good enough to get it done at Celtic.

While it looks like Celtic have not made a transfer bid for Mendy, the club might very well need to sign a striker in the summer, if Ajeti left as he is expected to. But at the same time, it is not a position which they need to splash out for.
