Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Celtic and Rangers’ games should have had VAR this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward delivered his verdict as the system is set to be introduced later this year.

BBC Sport reported earlier this month (19 April) that all but one of the SPFL clubs voted in favour of introducing VAR.

It is set to launch when the Scottish Premiership resumes following the conclusion of the Qatar World Cup in December.

The cost will be split amongst the 12 Premiership clubs with the title winners paying the most and the bottom slide the least on a sliding scale.

Asked whether he thought bringing VAR to Scotland was a good idea, Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “100 per cent.

“If the English Premier League has got it then the Scottish Premiership should have it.

“They should have had it in this season, I don’t understand why they’ve had to wait. Maybe it’s because of the finances.

“In European competitions they have it so you’ve got to have it in every league so the players are used to it when they go and play in Europe.”

Rangers’ 1-0 loss to RB Leipzig in the Europa League semi-final first leg yesterday (28 April) had VAR and Giovanni van Bronckhorst questioned its use.

Angelino scored the game’s only goal with a thumping strike through a sea of bodies and past Allan McGregor.

As quoted by the Scotsman today (29 April), Van Bronckhorst claimed VAR should have judged two RB Leipzig players to be in an offside position as the shot was struck.
