Celtic star admits he was surprised by international snub

From being a team in transition to the league leaders, Celtic are currently undergoing an extraordinary 2021/22 season. With a three-point lead over the Rangers, the Hoops sit at the top of the Premiership with seven league games left to be played. The club has already lifted the Scottish League Cup as well and has qualified for the semi-final of the Scottish Cup. Thus, there is a possibility of Ange Postecoglou’s side clinching the domestic treble.

Such a feat would not be possible without some of their best performers this season. Perhaps surprisingly, Anthony Ralston has been one of them.

There might not have been many expectations from the Scottish right-back coming into the campaign but Ralston has been excellent this season.

The full-back made his debut for the Scotland national team, against Denmark in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers last November. He came on as a substitute in their 2-0 victory on the night. And considering his fine form, fans expected him to make the Scottish squad once again but Steve Clarke left the Celtic star out and went with Stephen O’Donnell and Nathan Patterson, who has made a single appearance for Everton since his January transfer.

Celtic star admits surprise after Scotland national team snub

As reported by The National, Ralston has admitted that he was surprised at not being picked for the Scotland national team squad:

“I was a little bit.

“I feel that I have done well through the course of the season.

“I would have liked to have been involved in the squad but it is not to be at the minute.

“My main aim is to do my bit for Celtic and hopefully in time I will get that international recognition.

“These things are out of my control. The only thing in my control is my performances and my hard work.”

Scotland played their first of two international friendlies against Poland and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. The team will play their next game against Austria.

For Ralston, it is, of course, not the end of the world. He is only 23 years of age and should get many chances to represent his country in the future if he can continue to put in the performances. His focus should now be on finishing the 2021/22 season on a high, hopefully winning all that is there to be won.
