It was not how Celtic fans would have envisioned but ultimately, Ange Postecoglou’s side were able to get a narrow 3-2 win over Dundee FC at Parkhead, getting three very important points on the board. Earlier in the day, the Rangers had stumbled, drawing 1-1 against Dundee United and dropping a couple of points. And the Hoops did not let the opportunity slip.
It was a huge result for Celtic, even if the performance on the day left a lot to be desired. The passing seemed sloppy, there was not a lot of creativity and defence continued to be a problem.
And the fans had Giorgos Giakoumakis to thank, as the Greek striker rose to the occasion and scored a brilliant hattrick.
These are the types of games which might end up determining the fate of the Premiership title and on this occasion, Celtic got passing marks. Barely.
Big Gio, Ralston and more: 3 things learned from Celtic vs Dundee
Here are three things we learned from Celtic’s narrow 3-2 win over Dundee FC at Parkhead, as Giorgos Giakoumakis scored a hattrick:
There’s a Big Gio in town
It is safe to say that Giakoumakis’ start to life at Celtic was far from ideal, as he struggled for both form and fitness.
It is only after the winter break that he has gotten a decent run of games and it is safe to say that he is making his chances count at the moment.
The hattrick against Dundee should go a long way for the striker and even though he had been left out against Bodo/Glimt in midweek, one would expect him to line up from the very start when the two sides meet in the second leg away in Norway on February 24.
There is still a long way to go in the season but it is safe to say that Giakoumakis has a bigger part to play than most fans would have thought at first.
