When Jeremie Frimpong and Hatem Abd Elhamed left Celtic at the start of last year, the club brought in Jonjoe Kenny on loan from Everton for the rest of the season. After a bright start from the full-back, his form appeared to fade away quite quickly though and ultimately, he was not very impressive during his time at Parkhead. Now, he finds himself back at the Merseyside club.

On the other hand, Celtic’s options at right-back have certainly been handed a boost this season. Anthony Ralston has take his performances to a new level while the club signed Croatian international, Josip Juranovic, in the summer as well.

Kenny has impressed recently as well though after the arrival of Frank Lampard as the new Everton manager. His performance at left-back in their 3-0 win over Leeds United earned a lot of plaudits.

And while speaking with Everton TV, he made an admission about his time at Celtic:

“Celtic was a difficult period for me, off the pitch, especially. But having close family and friends and my agent and good mentors around me, and choosing that path and having these people who can really help me progress, changed a lot of things for me mentally.

“I have had a lot of ups and downs but it is about staying at it and doing what I need and focusing on me.”

Kenny has made an admission about his time at Celtic

It is safe to say that Kenny’s time at Celtic was not a great success and by the left he returned to Everton, there were not a lot of Hoops fans calling for the full-back to be signed on a permanent basis at the end of his loan deal.

But now, it looks like Kenny was going through a tough time off the pitch back then and as a result, his underwhelming performances make sense. One also has to point out the fact that not many Celtic players impressed last season either.

Now, Celtic find themselves in a better place, sitting at the top of the Premiership table and the Scottish League Cup already in the trophy cabinet. And we can only wish Kenny the best and hope that he enjoys a successful season at Everton as well.
