The magnitude of Celtic’s 3-0 win over the Rangers was huge to say the least. It sent the club top of the Premiership table after a long time and the fact that they were able to defeat the side from Ibrox, and so convincingly, was a huge confidence booster as well. Coming out of the winter break, Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side had a six point lead in the league but now, they find themselves chasing the Hoops.
Of course, we are still in early February and there is still a lot of football left to be played this season. One bad performance from Celtic and this lead could easily evaporate.
Thus, Ange Postecoglou’s side cannot sit back and reflect on their Glasgow Derby win much. That is already in the past and the focus should now be on the future. They have a tough game coming up against Motherwell next.
Chris Sutton has made an interesting observation from the aftermath of their win over the Rangers. He wrote in his column in the Daily Record:
I noticed Callum McGregor also going around the park during those immediate moments after the game when Celtic were thanking the fans for their support.
He was making sure no one was going overboard with celebrations. McGregor knows what it needed at the club and was driving home the point that one win isn’t enough.
Remember what happened when Steven Gerrard and his Rangers players were bouncing around like the title was won after winning one game at Celtic Park?
Celtic need to continue putting in the performances moving forward
There is still a long way to go in this Premiership campaign with 14 league games, including two Glasgow Derbies, still to be played. Thus, a one point lead is nothing to write home about. Postecoglou’s side must now look to increase the gap with the Rangers if possible.
Van Bronckhorst’s side have struggled since the return from the winter break but they might potentially have an ace up their sleeve in the form of Aaron Ramsey. It will be interesting to see how the Welshman does.
Celtic’s focus has to be on themselves though and doing as well as they can till the end of the season. This title race could very possibly go right down to the wire.
