The former Hoops hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insists the defender is the best left-back at the club.
Bolingoli, 26, has made two appearances for Celtic this season after being sent out on loan during 2020-21.
He was given his first outing of the campaign during last month’s clash against Livingston and also started against Motherwell on 16 October.
However, he was dropped from the matchday squads for the Hoops’ last two league games.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Ben Wild if he was surprised to see Bolingoli left out, McAvennie said, “Yes, very surprised.
“I still think he’s our best left-back. But the manager sees him every day, I don’t need to point out that he knows more than me.
“All I can say is what I have seen. Bolingoli has been great when I have seen him this season.
“I think he’s looked miles better than Taylor. For that reason, I was surprised he has been left out again.
“We are playing well at the moment and Postecoglou might not be comfortable with him in the new style.
“I doubt it’s a temperament issue. He’s not that kind of player. He’s strong in the tackle is all.
“They brought Scales on last week and I was surprised it wasn’t Bolingoli.
“That told me a lot about where he stands in the pecking order. I don’t get it.”
