Ex-PL Ref: Celtic star deserves his punishment as controversial footage analysed

Keith Hackett has insisted the referee was right to caution both Chris Kane and Cameron Carter-Vickers in St. Johnstone’s 2-0 loss to Celtic.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Fifa and Premier League referee claimed Nick Walsh is on “top form” and his handling of the incident was “textbook”.

Kane kicked the ball at Carter-Vickers after he won the ball after a coming together between the two.

Tempers flared after the incident and it led to a “mass confrontation” between players from both sides.

Walsh dished out yellow cards to both Kane and Carter-Vickers.

As quoted by the Daily Record, Ange Postecoglou questioned why Carter-Vickers was cautioned.

“I think this referee is in top form, I like his style, I like his motivation,” Hackett said after analysing the footage with Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“He’s in quickly, he’s blown and he’s handled it very well. I think he’s right, a double yellow. It’s a bit of a mass confrontation. Well done to him.

“I keep saying it, and I know referees in Scotland get criticised, but I think he’s handled that absolutely to the textbook.

“He’s close at hand. I don’t think there’s been a kick out of malice. There’s a ball around.

“I’m supporting the double yellow, I’m supporting a good bit of refereeing with common sense.”

Carter-Vickers has now been cautioned in his last two Scottish Premiership games and has four yellow cards across all competitions for Celtic.

The eight-time United States international has now played 10 games across all competitions for the Hoops since his summer move from Tottenham.
