Celtic told they don’t need to sign £16 million free agent

Celtic are expected to bring in several fresh faces this summer in an attempt to strengthen Brendan Rodgers’ squad for the upcoming season. Till now, they have signed Odin Thiago Holm and Marco Tilio. Both are very highly-rated talents and might go on to become superstars at Parkhead but at the same time, they are not high-profile additions.

While the club have been great at identifying young talents, Celtic could certainly do with some experience as well, especially with another campaign in the Champions League group stage coming up. And one player that they have been linked with recently is Mohamed Elyounoussi.

Elyounoussi has spent a couple of seasons on loan at Celtic in the past. And he is a free agent right now, having left Southampton.

Thus, it is not hard to see why Celtic are being linked with the Norwegian international. But as reported by Football Insider, Frank McAvennie said:

“I liked Elyounoussi as well I thought he was a good player but I think they have got enough players there.”

Celtic told they don’t need to sign £16 million free agent

Someone like Elyounoussi being available on a free transfer is certainly a good opportunity. It is worth remembering that Southampton shelled out a transfer fee around £16 million when they signed him from FC Basel.

Elyounoussi might not be a player who would come in and make a huge difference for Celtic. But he is very good without doubt, and put up some very good numbers during his first spell playing for the Scottish giants.

At the same time, it is also easy to see why some people might not want to see him back at Parkhead. Elyounoussi is coming off of a season in which he scored only one goal despite being a regular for Southampton, as the Saints got relegated. He is also 28 years of age. Thus, there is very little opportunity for him to get a big transfer away in the future.
