Celtic completed a major move this summer as they brought in Alexandro Bernabei from Lanus. It is believed that the Hoops shelled out a transfer fee around £3.75 million to sign the left-back. In the process of doing so, he also became the first Argentine player in the Hoops’ history, which is a surprising piece of trivia to be honest.
Left-back has been an area of weakness for the club for years now, as nobody has been able to fill the void left behind by Kieran Tierney, when he left to join Arsenal in the summer of 2019. Greg Taylor appears to be improving but Bernabei should provide him with some much needed competition.
One worry surrounding Bernabei is his suspension status, as he is subject of a two-match ban after being sent off for headbutting Colon star Augusto Schott in his final game for Lanus.
As reported by the Scottish Daily Express, Celtic should find out in the next 24 hours whether they will be able to use Bernabei in the first two matches of the next Premiership campaign or not.
Celtic look set to receive massive Bernabei news soon
It remains to be seen what happens with Bernabei and his suspension from his time at Lanus. While suspensions are mostly held up when players move from one European league to another, it will be interesting to see what the decision is considering the left-back has arrived from Argentina.
If the suspension is held up, Bernabei will miss the first two league games of the 2022/23 season, which are scheduled to be against Aberdeen at home and Ross County away.
Whatever may be the case, this should be a small bump in the road for what should be an exciting first season in Europe for Bernabei. He has all the attributes to be a great fit in Ange Postecoglou’s side.
