Surprise twist in Ben Davies to Celtic transfer saga

Celtic will be looking to strengthen in a few positions this summer. One of them could turn out to be centre-back despite the fact that they have already signed Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent deal from Tottenham Hotspur in a move that could potentially rise up to £10 million with add-ons.

Yet, the situation of Christopher Jullien is one that must be carefully considered. He is entering the final year of his contract with the club and barely featured last season, making only a solitary appearance in Ange Postecoglou’s side since his return from injury.

Interestingly, the club were recently linked with a move for Ben Davies once again. The player had come very close to signing a pre-contract agreement with Celtic during his time at Preston North End, before making a stunning move to Liverpool, when Jurgen Klopp’s side were in the middle of an injury crisis.

Even then, Davies did not make a single appearance for Liverpool though, spent the previous season out on loan at Sheffield United, and is believed to be on his way out of Anfield this summer. Celtic were believed to be one of the clubs interested in the centre-back with rumours suggesting that they had made contact with Klopp’s side. But now, the long-running saga has taken another twist.

Another twist in long-running Davies to Celtic transfer saga

As reported by The Herald, Celtic have not made contact with Liverpool yet with a view to rekindling their interest in Davies.

It would not be hard to understand if the club did decide to make a move for Davies in the future. At the end of the day, it feels like they do need another option at centre-back, as Jullien has not be a regular feature in the team for years while Stephen Welsh just does not seem ready to be a regular starter, in case either Carter-Vickers or Carl Starfelt picked up an injury.

At the same time though, Celtic have targeted a different style of players since the arrival of Postecoglou and as a result, it would be a bit of a surprise if they went back after Davies.
