Celtic appear to have pulled off a stunning move by signing Benjamin Siegrist on a four-year deal on a free transfer. The Swiss goalkeeper had been one of the best in all of Scotland during his time at Dundee United but became a free agent this summer, after his deal with the club ran out. He has now become the Hoops’ second signing of this transfer window, after Cameron Carter-Vickers.

It is an interesting move to say the least. Joe Hart has been the number one choice between the posts since arriving at the club last summer. He does not have any real competition for his spot in the team though, and Siegrist can certainly provide that.

Siegrist had also been linked with the likes of the Rangers and Manchester United in the summer, but has ended up joining Celtic instead.

While speaking on the club’s official website about the move, the new Celtic signing said:

“It feels amazing, it’s a very proud feeling to be here, and I’m really, really excited. I can’t wait to get going and meet the staff, the players, and, ultimately play for this football club.

“I had a phone call from the manager, he hung up the phone and I think people just knew straight away that something good was happening. It was a very proud moment in my career,

“To be here and be representing the football team, the colours, the city and everything, it’s a hugely proud moment, and everything I’ve always wanted to be – at a top environment, at a top team and it simply can’t get any better than this.”

It looks like Postecoglou’s phone call had an effect on Siegrist’s decision to join Celtic. That is certainly interesting, and could the Swiss goalkeeper have a bigger role than just being the back-up option to the Manchester City legend?

Siegrist is a brilliant goalkeeper in his own right and Celtic fans will know that well from some of the performances he put against the Hoops, while playing for Dundee United over the past four seasons.

Hart has done a wonderful job since his arrival at Celtic from Tottenham Hotspur, both as a player and as a leader. But at the same time, he is known for his ability with the ball at his feet. Also, at 35 years of age, he is not a long-term solution between the posts for the Hoops.
