Moussa Dembele hands Celtic an unexpected blow

Moussa Dembele is one of the most popular players in Celtic’s recent history. He made a name for himself during his time at Parkhead before moving to Lyon. The Frenchman was superb during his stint at Parkhead, and was especially good when it was time to face the Rangers in the Glasgow Derby. To this day, he continues to speak fondly of his time at the club on social media.

Dembele is coming off of a superb season for Lyon as well. After a disastrous 2020/21 campaign, similar to Celtic, he managed to turn things around.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, Dembele scored 22 goals and provided 5 assists in 36 appearances last season.

As a result, it had looked like he was primed to leave Lyon in a big move this summer. The expectation only grew when Alexander Lacazette ended up sealing his returning to the French club after leaving Arsenal. Of course, this is all of interest to Celtic because of the fact that they have sell on clause for their former striker. But now, it appears that they have been handed an unexpected blow in that regard.

Dembele hands unexpected blow to Celtic

Despite all the signs pointing towards the Frenchman leaving Lyon this summer, it looks like that might not turn out to be the case after all.

As reported by L’Equipe, Dembele feels good at Lyon at the moment and does not intend to leave the club.

One major worry for Celtic would be the fact that Dembele’s current deal with Lyon is believed to be running out in the summer of 2023 and if he does end up leaving the club as a free agent, similar to what Memphis Depay did last season, it would be a major blow for the Hoops and their sell on clause would go to waste.
