Fresh twist in Alexandro Bernabei to Celtic transfer saga

Alexandro Bernabei has been heavily linked with a move to Celtic in recent days. The club were believed to have their eyes on several other left-backs as well, like Mohanad Jeahze of Hammarby, Erick Otieno of AIK and Francisco Ortega of Velez Sarsfield, but now, it looks like the 21-year-old Argentine has climbed up to the top of the Hoops’ transfer priority list.

Bernabei currently plays for Lanus in Argentina and despite being just 21 years of age, he has plenty of experience at the senior level. He has also represented his country at the youth level.

It is believed that Lanus are ready to let him go this summer, if the right offer comes in. Interestingly, he recently missed some of their games but has returned to action since then. Rumours have suggested that the Argentine club will look for a transfer fee around £4 million for Bernabei.

But as reported by the Daily Record, Celtic are keen to land Bernabei for around half of that fee.

Fresh twist in Celtic’s transfer chase for Bernabei

It is not hard to see why shelling out that kind of a transfer fee would be a problem for Celtic, especially since they have already completed a big move in signing Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent basis from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal that could rise up to £10 million with add-ons and are on the verge of signing Jota from Benfica as well.

As a result, it could be difficult for the Hoops to make a £4 million offer for a left-back who has not played in Europe before and would be brought in, mostly based on his raw potential, to compete with Greg Taylor for a first-team spot.

Bernabei has a lot of attributes which could help him in being a starter for Postecoglou’s side though, whether it be his incredible pace, his dribbling ability, his aggressive pressing off the ball or his quality in the final third of the pitch.
