Chris Sutton points out huge advantage Celtic have over Rangers

Celtic and the Rangers must both be keen to strengthen their squads over the summer transfer window and have a need to do so as well. The Hoops will be returning to Champions League group stage football after several years and must be keen to impress in Europe’s elite competition. On top of that, they have the Scottish Premiership title to defend against their Glasgow rivals as well.

On the other hand, the Rangers must be heavily disappointed to suffer a 29-point swing over the course of one season against Celtic and failing to retain the Premiership title that they had won so comfortably in the 2020/21 season.

Thus, it would not be much of a surprise to see both clubs make additions to their squads over the course of the summer.

Celtic do have an advantage in this regard though, as their place in the Champions League group stage is already booked. On the other hand, while the Rangers are not out of contention, they will need to get past a tough qualification phase if they want to make it there. Chris Sutton has pointed this out. He wrote in his column in the Daily Record:

There is no need for juggling finances trying to draw up plans for different scenarios about whether they’ll be in the group stages of the Champions League or not.

There’s no need to have to wait until the end of August and after the qualifiers to tell them if they’ll be at Europe’s top table next season.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst is not in a position when he can promise a signing target a place in the group stages of the Champions League, whereas Postecoglou doesn’t have that problem. He went last season and earned that conversation starter by winning the title.

Celtic have massive advantage over the Rangers this summer

It goes without saying that this is a massive advantage for Celtic. Not only do they know that they will get the financial boost that comes with being in the Champions League and can make transfer moves accordingly.

At the same time, they can also attract players to Parkhead with the lure of guaranteed Champions League football, something that the Rangers cannot do yet.

Thus, this is a massive advantage for the Hoops to say the least and one that they have earned, thanks to their Premiership win last season against all odds, when even the most optimistic of Celtic fans would not have expected it.
