Celtic could rip up £4.5 million star’s contract and release him

Celtic are in a much better position now than they were last summer, when the Hoops were need in need of a major rebuild both on and off the pitch following a disastrous 2020/21 campaign. On top of that, several key players like Scott Brown, Odsonne Edouard, Kristoffer Ajer, Ryan Christie and more, decided to leave the club. As a result, expectations were low coming into the season but Ange Postecoglou’s side ended up winning the Premiership and the League Cup against all odds.

As a result, it is safe to say that the squad is much more settled now. But while a rebuild might no longer be needed, the club could do with a bit of restructuring and strengthening over the summer, especially with Champions League football guaranteed for next season.

As a result, while new players are expected to be brought in, at the same time, some are expected to head out of the Parkhead exit door as well. Vasilis Barkas could be one of them.

As reported by Sportdog (via Daily Record), Celtic are weighing up ‘ripping up’ Barkas’ contract. AEK Athens, his former club, are believed to be monitoring the goalkeeper’s situation while PAOK might hold an interest as well.

Celtic could let the player leave for free this summer

Barkas was believed to have been signed for a transfer fee around £4.5 million in the summer of 2020 after Celtic failed to bring back Fraser Forster.

He was very highly rated from his time at AEK Athens and most people believed that Celtic had actually pulled off a great move to bring him to Parkhead and he could be the number one between the sticks for a long time to come.

Things have not gone as expected though, as Barkas has struggled badly and at the moment, finds himself completely out of the first-team picture. As a result, it makes sense for all parties to part ways.
