By the turn of the year, most Celtic fans must have written Giorgos Giakoumakis off as a transfer flop on the part of the club. He had barely featured since arriving in the summer from VVV-Venlo, playing for whom he had topped the Eredivisie scoring charts last season. But he struggled with one injury after another during his first several months at Parkhead.
Questions marks had already been there when he had arrived, as his goalscoring record before the previous season with VVV-Venlo was nothing to write home about. Thus, many wondered whether he was a one-season wonder.
Giakoumakis has looked like a completely different player in the second half of the season though and topped the Premiership scoring charts as well, despite playing in barely half the games. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he finished the season with 17 goals but had played just 1471 minutes of football in total.
And Giakoumakis has claimed that he will be even better next season as he has shown just 70 per cent. As reported by The Scotsman, the Greek striker said:
“Of course I will be better next season.
“Right now I feel I’ve maybe shown 70 per cent as I didn’t feel fully fit or healthy in the first six months. It will be totally different when I get a full pre-season. I hope next season is going to be amazing. Finishing top scorer [on my own] is one of my targets. First of all it’s about winning titles with the team, and then it’s being the top league scorer.”
Giakoumakis makes incredible promise to Celtic fans
It is safe to say that if this was Giakoumakis at 70 per cent, we cannot wait to see how good he looks at his best.
One could argue that he played the biggest part in Celtic’s Premiership title triumph this season. When Kyogo got injured for an extended period of time, the club’s season could have easily gone South and faded away.
Not only did Giakoumakis step in and fill Kyogo’s absence though but he took things to a whole different level. Thus, the Greek striker deserves a lot more credit than he has probably been given for his debut season with Celtic. And we will be hoping that he remains injury-free for the next one and is able to show what he is really capable of.
