Alan Hutton has insisted Mark Lawwell’s arrival in a recruitment role looks like a “really smart appointment” for Celtic.

The former Scotland defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the new hire would only help the Bhoys in the transfer window after Ange Postecoglou’s “unbelievable” record of signings so far.

As confirmed by Celtic on Tuesday (3 May), Lawwell has joined as the club’s head of first-team scouting and recruitment, having left his post as City Football Group’s head of scouting and recruitment.

The son of former Celtic chief Peter, Lawwell worked with Postecoglou during his time as manager of Yokohama F. Marinos, one of CFG’s affiliate clubs.

Hutton insisted everything about the appointment makes sense for the Hoops.

Hutton told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “First and foremost, it’s obviously Peter Lawwell’s son so he’s been round about the club. He has known exactly what’s going on for a long period of time.

“So you’re off to a running start anyway, especially when you can lean on your dad at certain moments.

“To have worked with Ange Postecoglou before, you know what he’s looking for. You know the profile of player that he’s after and his philosophy.

“You’re ahead of the game already and you know each other’s personalities. I think it’s a really smart appointment, it’ll be a really good one moving forward.

“The proof will be in the pudding of who comes in. Ange Postecoglou has done an unbelievable job so far, so I don’t see why that would change.

“He’s just added somebody else, another layer, to help them move the team forward. Contacts are what make these guys and separate the good from the not so good.

“It’s who can bring in, who you know, who you can call upon. He’s got the contacts, he knows how the club works, how the manager works. I think that’s a good match.”
