Expert issues worrying update on Jota signing for Celtic

Celtic will not sign Benfica loanee Jota on a permanent basis this summer.

That’s according to former Hoops hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the forward’s future.

As quoted by the Scotsman (24 April), Ange Postecoglou stated Celtic are only thinking about this season and suggested “conversations” over a potential permanent deal would have to wait.

Speaking to the Sky Sports after last weekend’s win over Ross County (24 April), as quoted by The Scotsman, Jota himself also shot down talk of the future.

Jota scored for the Hoops as they drew 1-1 with Rangers on Sunday (1 May).

When asked if he thinks Celtic will eventually wrap up a permanent deal for the winger, McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild, “I don’t think so.

“I would love it to happen. Every time I see him he has been tremendous.

“He can be a bit hot and cold sometimes but he has been different class since he came back from injury.

“He’s a talented boy and I hope he likes what is happening at Celtic. It’s a great environment.

“He’s one hell of a player but I think if he was going to sign then he would have by now.

“Maybe I’m wrong, I hope I am wrong but maybe he has his eyes on a move somewhere else this summer.”

Celtic remain top of the Premiership following their draw against Rangers.

They will win the title if they beat Hearts next weekend (7 May).
