Celtic would dominate Scottish football for the majority of Steven Gerrard’s time as the manager of the Rangers but he did manage to guide the Ibrox side to a Premiership title, stopping the Hoops from winning 10IAR at the same time. Although, considering how things turned out at Parkhead in the 2020/21 campaign, one could argue that they stopped themselves more than anything else.

Gerrard would end up leaving the Rangers in the middle of the ongoing season though in order to take the Aston Villa job and there, he has had an up and down time since then.

While things were not close between the Glasgow giants in terms of trophies during Gerrard’s time at Ibrox, with Celtic winning six to the Rangers’ one, the manager did have a strong head-to-head record against the Hoops.

One such win against Celtic came at the end of 2019, a game that is remembered to this day for Gerrard’s celebrations at full-time following the Rangers 2-1 victory at Parkhead. It would ultimately lead to nothing though as the Hoops secured another treble that season. And the current Aston Villa manager has admitted that he regrets his behaviour after that particular match.

Gerrard makes unexpected admission about Celtic regret

As reported by Balls.ie, Gerrard said while speaking on The Overlap:

“Maybe (he regretted) going into the media and answering a few questions where I thought ‘why have I said that, why did I let myself get there’.

“I remember once we beat Celtic at Celtic Park and there had been a lot of mud flying with ex-players and pundits in the media, it’s not that I go looking for it.

“We beat Celtic at Celtic Park and I was probably a bit overboard with my celebrations on the pitch and with Neil Lennon, which I regret.”

While the Rangers did not win any trophies that season, that game did mark a turning of the tide in the Glasgow Derby.

Under the management of Gerrard, the Rangers would not lose another game against Celtic, going unbeaten the entire 2020/21 season and then winning the first Glasgow Derby of this campaign as well, before the Liverpool legend left to join Aston Villa.

The Hoops have rebounded brilliantly from their disappointing campaign though and appear to be closing in on winning back the Premiership title from the Rangers. With 5 league games to go, they have 6-point lead.
