Ange Postecoglou ready to give Celtic youngster ‘priceless’ opportunity

Ange Postecoglou has been looking ahead to the future and it looks like he sees great success ahead for one of Celtic’s youngsters. The manager appears to have plans in place to help the player develop further. It is safe to say that there are high hopes at Parkhead surrounding him and many believe that he is destined to be a first-team regular for the club in the future.

Celtic B team manager, Tommy McIntyre, has always had great things to say about Tobi Oluwayemi and his future at the club. The player signed from Tottenham Hotspur in summer of 2019 and is impressing not only at club level but also has appeared for the England Under-19s side as well.

He is very highly rated at Celtic and there have even been rumours about a development plan which would see Oluwayemi becoming the understudy and second choice goalkeeper for the Hoops behind Joe Hart. We’ve already seen him make the bench a few times.

Postecoglou appears to have recognised Oluwayemi’s strengths and appears to be planning on helping his development by bringing him into the first-team fold. As reported by Football Scotland, the Celtic manager has said in the past:

“He’s a pretty lucky young man because he’s got an ex-England No1 and a guy who has reached the very top as a goalkeeper training with him every day.

“It’s going to be priceless.

“I didn’t want to waste that opportunity, so he’ll be training with us regularly and, hopefully, we’ll watch him develop over the next couple of years.”

Can Oluwayemi be the next Celtic goalkeeper after Hart?

When Oluwayemi has featured on the first team bench, he has been placed ahead of Greek international keeper Vasilis Barkas in selection terms.

With Barkas now likely to move out of the club in the summer, there’s definitely a gap in the goalkeeper pecking order. Scott Bain, the current No. 2 keeper, could well be overtaken in the next year or two if Oluwayemi maintains his current development.

Oluwayemi is still young but to have the manager’s backing and a clear development plan and opportunity to progress is excellent news. Not only for himself but it’s a very positive signal to other youngsters at a time when the likes of Ben Doak are potentially leaving.
