It has been a long time since Patrick Roberts left Celtic, but the rumours linking him with a return to Parkhead have never just gone away. Every summer, there is a point, when the former England youth international is linked with a move to the club but till now, it has never transpired. And it looks like the Hoops had him on their radar in the last summer transfer window as well.
It is without question that Roberts played the best football of his career in a Celtic jersey and during his loan stint at Parkhead from Manchester City, he had looked like a superstar in the making.
Unfortunately for him, things have not quite gone to plan since leaving Celtic. In fact, Roberts has never scored more than once for any team other than the Hoops.
That is incredible considering how good he was for Celtic at times. And it has emerged that the club held talks with him over a potential return this summer as well, but ultimately, Ange Postecoglou decided against it.
Why Postecoglou rejected Roberts’ Celtic return revealed
Roberts would ultimately go on to join League One side, Sunderland, where he is starting to get some decent playing time. It remains to be seen if he can bring his career back on track at the Stadium of Light. At the end of the day, he is still just 25 years of age.
On the other hand, Celtic would go on to add to their options on the wings in the summer by bringing in Liel Abada and Jota, on loan from Benfica, and it is safe to say that both have turned out to be big hits at Parkhead.
