One of Celtic’s biggest problems last season was their lack of a consistent goalkeeper. Vasilis Barkas had been brought in from AEK Athens for a transfer fee around £4.5 million, with hopes that he would turn out to be the long-term solution between the posts. It is safe to say that things did not work out as expected though as the Greek international struggled for the Hoops.

As a result, Barkas, Scott Bain and Conor Hazard, all got runs with the first-team gloves. And none of them were great to be honest.

There were hopes that Barkas could rediscover his form this season but after a couple of early season mistakes, Celtic ended up signing Joe Hart from Tottenham Hotspur.

The Englishman has come in and nailed down his spot in the starting XI. He has revealed that he had spoken to Celtic last season as well but they decided against making a move back then. While speaking to the In The Stiffs Podcast and as reported by The Scottish Sun, Hart said:

“I had actually spoken to Celtic the year before. It was something they decided (at the top) there was no resell in me so they didn’t want to take me on to have no resell in me doing well.

“If I did well great, but they didn’t gain anything from it.”

In hindsight, it is safe to say that it was a mistake on the part of Celtic to not make a move for Hart last season.

He has proven himself since arriving at Parkhead, both as a goalkeeper and as a leader. And who knows how last season would have turned out if Celtic had Hart between the posts.

What is done is done though and at least the Hoops made the move this time around. A lot of eyebrows were raised when the club did sign Hart but it is safe to say that he has proven a lot of people wrong since then.

Celtic are still in the running for a potential domestic treble and Hart has played his part in that for sure.
