Celtic have enjoyed a brilliant January transfer window, completing five signings in the form of Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi, Johnny Kenny and Matt O’Riley. But recent rumours have suggested that they could be looking to potentially bring in one more player. Derby County’s Lee Buchanan has been linked with a move to Parkhead for quite some time and appears to still be on the Hoops’ radar.
Buchanan has been a standout for Derby County since breaking into the first-team and has continued to show his impressive potential. It is easy to forget that he is still just 20 years of age.
On the other hand, left-back has been a position of worry for Celtic for some time now. Since Kieran Tierney left for Arsenal in the summer of 2019, nobody has been able to make the position their own on a long-term basis.
Derby County find themselves in a difficult position financially as well. But judging from Wayne Rooney’s comments, it feels unlikely that a move for Buchanan will happen. As reported by the Daily Record, the manager said:
“No players will be leaving. 100 per cent.
“I can guarantee that will be the case.”
Rooney’s comments end Celtic’s Buchanan transfer hopes
Buchanan could have been a solid signing for Celtic. He looks like a real prospect and has impressed even though Derby County have had their fair share of struggles both on and off the pitch in recent times.
It does not look like the move will happen this month. But it is worth pointing out that Buchanan’s current deal with Derby County runs out in the summer. The Rams do have an option to extend his contract by a further year but considering the club’s current financial situation, it will be interesting to see how things turn out in that regard.
While when it comes to Celtic, it would certainly be a bit of a surprise if the club end up making another signing in this window.
