Major update on Vasilis Barkas’ potential Celtic exit

Celtic had tried to bring back Fraser Forster in the summer of 2020 after he enjoyed a successful loan stint at Parkhead from Southampton in the previous campaign. That did not transpire though and the English goalkeeper remained in the Premier League. On the other hand, the Hoops decided to go out and sign Vasilis Barkas from AEK Athens for a transfer fee believed to be around £4.5 million in hopes of solving their problems between the posts.

It is no secret that the move has not worked out till now as Barkas has failed to make an impact since joining Celtic.

On the other hand, the Hoops signed Joe Hart in the summer and he has proven to be a solid addition for the club. The English goalkeeper has not only put in great performances but he has also proven himself to be a leader in this team.

As a result, Barkas is nowhere near the first-team picture at Celtic at the moment. In fact, he has struggled to even make the bench on most matchdays. And thus, he has perhaps naturally been linked with a move away from Parkhead this month.

Celtic have received a loan enquiry for Barkas

As tweeted out by Anthony Joseph, Celtic have received a loan enquiry from IFK Goteborg for Barkas:

It has been rumoured that Sheffield United had tried to sign Barkas on loan as well but ultimately things did not work out because of a variety of reasons, one of which was the goalkeeper’s high wages.

Thus, it does feel unlikely that Celtic would want to pay the bulk of his wages while the Greek international was out on loan. But with the January transfer window slowly approaching its close and options looking very limited when it comes to a potential Barkas exit, you never know how things will turn out.
