Interesting details emerge about Celtic’s Matt O’Riley signing

The rumours about Celtic being interested in MK Dons’ Matt O’Riley had come a bit out of the blue after the club had not been able to get a move for Riley McGree over the line earlier in the January transfer window. The Hoops moved swiftly this time around though and the English midfielder has already completed his switch to Parkhead. It will be interesting to see how he does for the Glasgow giants.

O’Riley had come through the youth ranks at Fulham but decided to leave despite being offered a deal by the London club. And it has certainly proven to be the right move for the youngster.

O’Riley has been an absolute standout for MK Dons over the past year or so and has appeared to be on a different level while playing in League One. He has also gotten his big move to Celtic just months after turning 21 years of age.

And it appears that Celtic had to meet the release clause in O’Riley’s MK Dons contract to bring him to Parkhead. The League One side revealed on their official website:

O’Riley’s contract with MK Dons included a release clause which was met by Celtic earlier this week. They have since finalised a deal with the midfielder, ending his impressive 12-month spell at Stadium MK.

This certainly goes on to show that Celtic really wanted to add O’Riley to their ranks. It is believed that they shelled out a transfer fee around £1.5 million to bring the English midfielder to Parkhead.

On paper, O’Riley has all the attributes to be a perfect fit in the middle of the park for Postecoglou’s side. He has an impressive range of passing, can get past a man, has a good eye for goal as well as the ability to play the final ball for his teammates, and has got a solid defensive side to his game too.

Now, the big question is whether he can make the adjustment to Celtic, as it is certainly a step up for the former League One star.
