Celtic handed worry by surprising Jota and Benfica rumours

When Celtic completed a season-long loan move for Jota, there were a lot of questions surrounding the Portuguese winger and for good reason. He had failed to establish himself in the Benfica first-team despite being one of the most highly-rated players in the world while coming through the youth ranks. He was even linked with a move to Real Madrid at one point and struggled on loan at Real Valladolid in the previous campaign as well.

Jota has looked like a completely different player since joining Celtic though and has easily been one of the best in Scotland this season till now.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 8 goals and provided 7 assists in 19 appearances for Celtic across all competitions this season.

Naturally, there have been calls from the Celtic fans for the club to sign him on a permanent basis. They are believed to have an option to buy included in the loan deal for a transfer fee around £6 million. Promisingly, there have been suggestions that the Hoops are willing to shell that out to sign Jota but they have been handed a massive worry in that quest.

Celtic handed massive worry by Jota and Benfica rumours

As tweeted out by Alex Goncalves, Benfica remain keen to keep Jota which is why Celtic have not been able to sign him on a permanent basis. They want the winger to return to his boyhood club and there is a feeling that there is a decent chance that it will happen.

Ultimately, it looks like it could all come down to Jota and who he wants to play for moving forward.

Jota has been with Benfica since he was eight years of age and naturally, there could be a desire to represent them at the top level. But at the same time, he has got a great run going at Celtic and there would definitely be risk involved in going back to the Portuguese club, where he had failed to make his mark all these years.
