When Ange Postecoglou arrived at Celtic, there were a lot of areas that the club needed to improve in after a disappointing 2020/21 campaign that had seen them finish without a trophy and 25 points behind the Rangers in the Premiership. And one position that definitely needed change at Parkhead was between the posts, where nobody had managed to make their presence felt last season.
The club already had three goalkeepers in the form of Scott Bain, Vasilis Barkas and Conor Hazard, and all of them had gotten runs in the first-team last season. But neither of the three was able to make the first-team gloves his own.
As a result, Celtic ended up signing Joe Hart from Tottenham Hotspur. And while a lot of eyebrows were raised back then about the move, it has proven to be a masterstroke in hindsight.
Not only has Hart come in and established himself as the number one for Celtic, but he has also become a leader of this team. On the other hand, Bain appears to be the clear number two now and has been handed a contract extension by Celtic. The club tweeted out:
Celtic player’s exit more likely now after Bain announcement
Bain’s contract extension will keep him at Parkhead until the summer of 2024. On the other hand, it makes Barkas’ exit even more likely.
The Greek goalkeeper arrived with a lot of expectations in the summer of 2020 but has not been able to find his feet at Celtic since then and has been linked with a move away for a while now.
While that has not transpired till now, it feels unlikely that he will remain at Parkhead for the foreseeable future, considering that he has barely featured this season and does not even appear to be the number two at the club anymore.
