Coming into the January transfer window, Celtic knew that their biggest issue was their lack of squad depth. There were several positions all over the pitch that needed strengthening and the Hoops must be commended for how they have approached things. The club have already gotten deals done for Daizen Maeda, Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi and Johnny Kenny. And now, it looks like a fifth arrival of the month might not be far away.
Midfield is an area that Celtic did need more options in. But not many would have expected them to go out and get three more midfielders.
Hatate and Ideguchi are both expected to play in the middle of the park. And it appears that they will be joined by Australian international, Riley McGree.
As reported by the Daily Record, Celtic have clinched their fifth signing of January as McGree has agreed to join the club. The Hoops agreed a transfer fee in the region of £3 million with Charlotte FC.
Celtic have agreed move for McGree
Postecoglou will know McGree well from his time as the Australian national team manager. In fact, he had given him his first international call up back when the midfielder was still a teenager. Thus, it goes without saying that he is very highly-rated.
And McGree has since then proven himself in Europe as well, providing some brilliant performances for Birmingham City on loan. He was one of the Championship club’s best players in recent times and there were many calls for him to be signed on a permanent basis.
Now though, there appears to be very little chance of that happening as McGree looks set to join his former national team manager at Celtic. While many eyebrows will be raised about the club’s decision to sign another midfielder, it remains to be seen if the Australian international proves to be a success at Parkhead.
