Celtic pulled off a transfer masterstroke when they signed Cameron Carter-Vickers from Tottenham Hotspur on a season-long loan in the final hour of the summer transfer window. The defender has come in and established himself as an ever present member of Ange Postecoglou’s starting XI. And naturally, there have been calls to sign him on a permanent basis, with their being an option to buy included in the loan deal.

The transfer fee that the option to buy is still unclear though and there is some confusion around it. Some rumours have suggested that it could be as high as £10 million including add-ons. But figures like £3 million and £6 million have been doing the rounds in the media as well.

It was a bit of surprise when the club did manage to pull off the signing of Carter-Vickers so late in the transfer window.

Postecoglou has admitted though that it was not a permanent move because they had run out of time. As reported by the Daily Record, the Celtic manager said:

“Thankfully for us we were able to get Cameron over the line at the last minute. It was a bit of a leap of faith for him because he didn’t have a lot of time to think about it but I’m sure he would say that it has been a great move for him and it’s been a great move for the club.

“Why was it not a permanent deal? Because we didn’t have the time. It was really late in the piece and the logical thing for all parties was a loan, otherwise we wouldn’t have got the deal done.”

It is safe to say that the United States international has proven to be a good signing for the club. In fact, many would argue that he is the best defender at Parkhead right now.

The biggest question surrounding Carter-Vickers right now is whether Celtic can sign him on a permanent basis or not.

It is safe to say that he has made quite an impression during his time at Celtic. But at the same time, it is hard to see him break into Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur side anytime soon. Thus, a move to Celtic next summer might be the best thing for all parties involved right now. It will be interesting to see though whether it ends up happening or not.
