Daizen Maeda has been linked with a move to Celtic for quite some time now. The Yokohama F. Marinos start enjoyed a tremendous campaign and topped the J1 League scoring charts along with Leandro Damiao, despite not being an out-and-out striker. And with Ange Postecoglou’s side expected to strengthen in the January transfer window, it is not hard to understand the rumours linking him with a Parkhead switch.
According to stats from Transfermarkt, Maeda scored 23 goals and provided 5 assists in 36 J1 League appearances this season.
Maeda has incredible pace, stamina, movement in the box, ability to finish with both his feet and has played in Europe in the past as well. On top of everything else, he has played under the management of Postecoglou during their time together at Yokohama F. Marinos. In fact, it was the manager who brought him to the club.
And as tweeted out by Ekrem Konur, Postecoglou wants Maeda at Parkhead, Celtic have began negotiations with Yokohama F. Marinos and the transfer is expected to be formalised in January.
Maeda could be a terrific signing for Celtic in January
Maeda could prove to be a terrific signing for Celtic for a few reasons. The first of course is the fact that the Hoops need to make additions to their squad all over the pitch, including their forward positions. And the Japanese star’s versatility means that he can play in multiple roles.
Secondly, not only has Maeda already proven himself to be a brilliant player but he also has an understanding of Postecoglou’s style of football as well, having played under the manager in Japan. Thus, the adjustment would be easier for him than most other players.
It remains to be seen if Celtic do manage to make the move happen but if they do, it has the potential to be a great move on their part.
