Joe Ledley had arrived at Celtic from Cardiff City in the summer of 2010 on a free transfer and it is safe to say that it proved to be a brilliant signing for the Hoops. He would go on to enjoy three-and-a-half brilliant seasons with the club, playing a huge part in several league triumphs before departing in early 2014, to join Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

His time at Parkhead might not have been very long, but he certainly made significant contributions to the club all the while that he was there. And he even captained the side on several occasions, in the absence of Scott Brown.

Thus, it is safe to say that the former Celtic midfielder will be remembered by the fans for a long time, especially for his incredible work rate and leaving it all on the pitch every time.

And it is clear that Ledley enjoyed his time at Parkhead. He paid a beautiful tribute to Celtic in the post announcing his retirement from football. As reported by Wales Online, Ledley wrote on Instagram:

“Signing for Celtic was a true highlight, an amazingly unique football club. There was no better feeling than winning trophies for arguably the most passionate fans in the world, cherished memories.

“I achieved more than I could have ever imagined, but the time came to follow another dream and play in the Premier League, Crystal Palace opened the door for that.

“Playing against and alongside some of the best players in the game. Amazing.”

Ledley paid a brilliant tribute to Celtic in his retirement message

It is safe to say that Ledley enjoyed a great spell at Celtic and was a big part of the team during the first few campaigns in what would turn out to be a record-equalling run of nine straight league titles.

But he made significant contributions to other clubs through the course of his career as well. He was brilliant for Cardiff City, the club that he came through, as well as Crystal Palace. He went on to play for the likes of Derby County, Charlton Athletic, Newcastle Jets and Newport County as well. He was a huge part of the Wales national team as well for over a decade.

It is great to see him pay tribute to Celtic and the fans in his retirement message, and we can only thank him for his contributions and wish the best of luck moving forward.
